Even more curiously, the signing came on the heels of a season in which Crisp's on-base skills were as poor as they have been since 2006. On the other hand, Crisp did steal 49 bases in 58 attempts, an outstanding 84 percent success rate, tying Brett Gardner for tops in the American League. A closer look at his batted-ball data might explain why Beane was willing to bring Crisp back. The veteran fly-chaser had an exceptionally high line-drive rate of 24 percent, but his BABIP on all batted-ball types -- liners, flies and grounders -- was below league average in every category. Beane knows this is sure to correct, sending Crisp's average upward, affording him even more chances to steal.
