The concerns are twofold. First, his health. In 2011, aside from his balky knee, Mauer battled a mysterious bilateral leg weakness, a sore neck, a viral infection and even had a late-season bout with pneumonia. He is fully recovered from everything and the reports are that his knee feels great. Still, the knee has to be a concern and may limit the amount of catching the talented receiver is able to do this and future seasons. From a performance view, while it is apparent the 28 homers Mauer slugged in 2009 are the outlier, it is a bit unclear exactly where his power potential lies. Perhaps more importantly, it remains to be seen how much injury toll has impacted Mauer's ability to hit for not just a high, but exceptional average. His calling cards have been excellent contact, great plate discipline and hitting line drives in his sleep. Even last season, all these skills remained intact, so a healthy Mauer should again be able to top .300.
