Wainwright And Miller: One Shutout Follows Another
From Elias: Adam Wainwright fired a two-hit, 3-0 victory over the Rockies less than 24 hours after Shelby Miller has shut the Rockies down by the same score on just one hit. There have been only three other instances since the start of the 2011 season of a major-league team getting consecutive complete-game shutouts of nine-or-more innings. It was done on May 1-2 of last year by the Angels' Jerome Williams and Jered Weaver (a no-hitter) against the Twins; then on the next two days, it was done by the Blue Jays' Brandon Morrow and Henderson Alvarez against the Angels; and the last occurrence was by the Mets' Johan Santana (a no-hitter) and R.A. Dickey against the Cardinals, last June 1-2. The last pair of Cardinals' pitchers to turn the trick? Todd Stottlemyre and Alan Benes, against the Astros and the Padres, respectively, in 1996, Tony LaRussa's first season as the Redbirds' manager. The last major-league team with consecutive complete-game shutouts of nine-plus innings in which each pitcher allowed two-or-fewer hits was the Mets; Pedro Astacio and Jeff D'Amico tossed consecutive two-hit shutouts at Dodger Stadium on May 14-15, 2002. Miller and Wainwright combined to retire 40 consecutive batters over the two games (Miller got the last 27 batters on Friday, after a first-inning leadoff hit by Eric Young, Jr., and Wainwright put down the first 13 batters on Saturday). An impressive streak, for sure, but it came up two batters shy of the 42 straight batters retired by the Mariners' Stephen Pryor, Felix Hernandez (who threw a perfect game) and Hisashi Iwakuma last August.

Wainwright Is First Cardinals Starter To Allow 5 Earned Runs This Season
From Elias: The Cardinals overcame a poor performance by Adam Wainwright to post a 7-6 victory at Milwaukee. Wainwright allowed five runs over 5.1 innings, marking the first time in 30 games this season that a St. Louis starter was touched for five or more earned runs. Since 1900, that's the furthest into a season that the Cardinals ever advanced before one of its starting pitchers yielded five earned runs in a game. The previous high was 26 games before allowing five or more ERs in 1982.

Wainwright Sets A Record For Controlling The Strike Zone
From Elias: Adam Wainwright entered Tuesday's game against the Nationals with 28 strikeouts and no walks this season, and he struck out seven Washington batters before issuing his first walk of the season, to Bryce Harper. No other pitcher in baseball's modern era (1900 to date) has struck out more than 30 batters before his first walk of a season. The previous best was 30 strikeouts, by Dennis Eckersley for the Athletics in 1990 and Billy Wagner for the Phillies in 2004.
