Still, such a lengthy track record at this level has afforded us the opportunity to determine his weaknesses, and his are clear: impatience at the plate and miserable defense. Young's 4.4 percent walk rate the past five years combined ranks 14th-worst among players with 1,000-plus plate appearances, and it caps his batting-average potential at closer to .280 than .300, the latter the level scouts hoped for during his prospect days. He's also not a natural power source because of annually high ground-ball rates; his is 46.4 percent the past three seasons combined. Although he might be young enough to still take another development step and did catch the Tigers' eye with his 13 home runs in 55 games following his trade (playoffs included), Young probably will never be the MVP scouts once predicted.
