Hearken back to 2008, when then-closer Wilson twirled a 6.02 ERA, featuring an inflated 5.2 BB/9. He began to throw a cutter the following season, his last as a reliever. His K/9 went up to 10.3, his BB/9 dropped to 3.9 and eyes began to open. In 2010, the transition to starter occurred and along with it came a change in approach. Not only did Wilson throw the cutter more, he took some mph off his regular fastball and cutter, and most importantly, his changeup as well, keeping the necessary speed differential between the three pitches. The result was his fastball, cutter and slider all became plus pitches while his less-used curve and slider were neutral offerings. With five pitches in the southpaw's arsenal, he successfully completed the transition from a wild lefty closer to one of the more reliable starters in the league. Moving to Anaheim likely will help Wilson a little, but even in hitter-friendly Texas, Wilson had no problem keeping the ball in the yard.
