Thanks in part to throwing 16 percent more sliders to right-handed hitters last season, Maholm closed a previously wide gap in his lefty-righty splits, eliminating his past reputation as a matchups type worth using only against lefty-laden lineups. In 2011 and 2012 combined, lefties managed a .700 OPS against Maholm, compared to .716 for righties. Couple that with a ground ball rate of greater than 50 percent and Maholm is a lower-risk NL-only/deep-mixed option than you might think.
