MLB - Volquez's start misleading?
Through his first 3 starts of the season, Edinson Volquez appears to be headed in the right direction after last season's disastrous campaign. Volquez's ERA (4.24) is nearly a run and a half lower than his 2011 mark (5.71), while his opponents batting average has also dropped by about 30 points. However, look a little deeper and you'll see that he's largely been a product of a significantly lower home run/flyball ratio. This could be for many different reasons, but the fact that he's pitched two games at Petco Park and one at Dodgers Stadium likely is a big reason why. As you can see, Volquez's walk rate - his most consistent issue over his career - has actually increased from last season, while his strike rate and strikeout rate have remained mostly steady. The big difference? His HR-FB ratio.
