Garland tries to become majors' first nine-game winner

Chi White Sox (33-16) at Texas (28-20), 4:05 pm EDT

ARLINGTON, Texas (Ticker) - Jon Garland makes his second attempt at a major league-best ninth win Saturday when the Chicago Sox continue their three-game series with the Texas Rangers.

Garland (8-1, 2.57 ERA) suffered his first loss of campaign Monday, allowing three runs and 11 hits in seven innings and was outdueled by rookie Ervin Santana in a 4-0 setback to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

The righthander is tied for the major league lead in wins with Florida's Dontrelle Willis, who also is starting Saturday.

Garland picked up is eighth win of the season against the Rangers, yielding two runs and five hits in seven innings in a 5-2 victory May 17.

He will try to keep the White Sox from matching a season-high three-game losing streak after they dropped a 6-2 decision in the series opener Friday.

Alfonso Soriano homered twice and Mark Teixeira and Michael Young also added home runs for the Rangers, who have won seven straight since dropping two of three in Chicago two weeks ago.

Chan Ho Park (4-1, 4.61) will try to build off his best outing of the season and win his fourth straight decision. Park allowed just six hits in seven innings Sunday in a 2-0 triumph over the Houston Astros.

The righthander was hammered for five runs and six hits in six innings against the White Sox on May 16, but did not figure in a 7-6 victory.
