Indians hope to reverse struggles against Royals

Kansas City (10-25) at Cleveland (17-21) 7:05 pm EDT

CLEVELAND (Ticker) - Perhaps a meeting with the Kansas City Royals will reverse the Cleveland Indians' fortunes this time around.

Looking to avenge last week's sweep against the Royals, the Indians will try to snap a six-game losing streak when the teams meet Monday in the opener of a four-game series.

One of baseball's most disappointing teams over the first six weeks of the season, Cleveland's struggles began last week with a three-game sweep against Kansas City.

The Indians were unable to bounce back against Detroit this weekend, scoring a total of six runs in a three-game sweep. The Royals' weekend didn't go much better as they were swept by Baltimore, capped by an embarrassing 8-7 defeat Sunday in which closer Ambiorix Burgos surrendered four runs in the ninth inning.

Cleveland will turn to former Royal Paul Byrd (4-3, 6.52 ERA), who took the loss last Monday against Kansas City despite allowing just three earned runs in seven innings.

The Royals will give the ball to Jeremy Affeldt (2-2, 5.33), who is coming off the shortest start of his career. The lefthander lasted just 1 2/3 innings and allowed eight of the 12 batters he faced to reach base Tuesday in an eventual 10-7 win against the Indians.
