Scouting Report
1997 Season Injuries to Marty Cordova and Scott Stahoviak, along with the erratic performance of Rich Becker and Matt Lawton, opened the door for unheralded Brent Brede in 1997. He took advantage of the unexpected playing time and impressed manager Tom Kelly with his line-drive swing, his work ethic and his patience at the plate.
Hitting, Baserunning & Defense Brede's swing doesn't produce much power, though he can drive the ball if he gets his arms extended. He's usually patient, and held up well in his limited exposure to southpaws. He has produced .300 averages in the minors and could do so in the majors. Brede looks more like a basketball player than a baseball man. He has very long legs, runs well for a big guy and, like most Twins farm system products, he's a heady baserunner. He's also a good defensive player in the outfield and at first base.
1998 Outlook Though Brede's chance for a starting job is borderline, he looks like a fine reserve outfielder. There's a chance he could move beyond that if other players struggle or are lost to expansion. He has been rescued from the anonymity of the minor leagues by Kelly, and should be on Minnesota's roster in some capacity in 1998.
