Lo Duca's HR spoils Perez's shutout bid in ninth

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Oliver Perez came within three outs of his first complete game, holding Los Angeles to one run over eight-plus innings as the San Diego Padres beat the Dodgers 7-1 Monday night.

Perez (3-3) matched a season high with eight strikeouts, allowing five hits and four walks in his 26th career start. He lost the shutout when All-Star Paul Lo Duca led off the ninth with a homer. Scott Linebrink finished for the Padres.

The Dodgers' only previous scoring threat was in the fifth inning after a two-out triple by Wilkin Ruan and a walk to pinch-hitter Chad Hermansen. But Perez struck out Cesar Izturis to end the inning.

Perez, 21, who was sent down to the minors on May 1, is 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA in five starts since being recalled from Triple-A Portland on June 13.

San Diego scored five runs off Andy Ashby (2-5) in the fourth inning. Ryan Klesko hit a leadoff homer, and the first six batters had hits.

Klesko's 19th homer came on the first pitch against Ashby. Sean Burroughs followed with a single and scored on Rondell White's check-swing triple down the right-field line that carried into the Dodgers' bullpen in the corner.

Brian Buchanan, Ramon Vazquez and Miguel Ojeda followed with singles, with Buchanan and Ojeda driving in runs to make it 4-0. Perez made the first out of the inning on a grounder, but it brought another run home.

Ashby lasted four innings, giving up five runs on eight hits with one strikeout.

Ojeda and Mark Loretta added RBI singles off Steve Colyer in the sixth inning to put the Padres ahead 7-0.

    Game notes

Perez's longest previous outing was 7 1-3 scoreless innings. ... Ashby is 0-4 against San Diego, his former team.
