Padilla allows just three hits in eight innings

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Vicente Padilla pitched eight shutout innings and Bobby Abreu hit a two-run homer as the Philadelphia Phillies ended a four-game losing streak with a 2-0 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday night.

Padilla (10-8) allowed three hits, struck out four and walked one, plus he gave a much-needed rest to a weary bullpen that has struggled recently.

Dan Plesac retired one batter in the ninth, and Jose Mesa got the final two outs for his 20th save in 23 opportunities.

Kazuhisa Ishii (9-5) took the loss for the Dodgers, who were shut out for the second time in their past five games -- and for the eighth time this season. They have scored just three runs in their last five.

The Phillies scored the only runs of the game in the second inning. Mike Lieberthal hit a leadoff single to right, and Abreu then lined a 3-1 pitch to center field that barely cleared the wall for his 17th homer.

The Dodgers had runners on first and second with no outs in the fourth after Shawn Green singled and Paul Lo Duca was hit by a pitch. But Padilla ended the threat by getting Jeromy Burnitz and Adrian Beltre to fly out to left and retiring Larry Barnes on a soft grounder to first.

Los Angeles had just three baserunners the rest of the way, two of whom were hit by pitches from Padilla. Dave Roberts got the only other hit for Los Angeles.

Nick Punto made a pair of diving stops to help Padilla. Punto ended the third inning with a lunge to his left to stop a two-out grounder, and he made an over-the-shoulder diving catch on pinch-hitter Mike Kinkade's liner to short center in the eighth.

Ishii allowed just three hits and two runs with seven strikeouts in six innings.
