DENVER (AP) -- The longest nine-inning game this season at Coors Field was worth the wait for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Quinton McCracken hit a run-scoring single in the ninth inning Thursday to lead the Diamondbacks over the Colorado Rockies 8-7.

Robby Hammock led off the ninth with a walk off Brian Fuentes (3-3), advanced to second on a groundout and scored on McCracken's two-out single up the middle.

The 3 hour, 48-minute game was the Colorado's last at home this season. The crowd of 23,056 left the Rockies' home attendance at 2,334,085, its lowest ever and down from 2,737,918 a year ago. Colorado topped 3 million each season until 2002.

"They got their money's worth today," Diamondbacks manager Bob Brenly said. "You want to watch a big league hardball game, we'll keep you out here for four hours. Boy! Obviously, both starters struggled with their command and there were a lot of deep counts and a lot of opportunities for both ballclubs. Fortunately, we got one more than they did, and that's all that matters at the end of the day."

Brenly played a hunch, inserting McCracken in the starting lineup because he had a good at-bat coming off the bench Wednesday night.

As a reserve outfielder, McCracken said he has to make the most of his opportunities.

"Whenever you get a chance to get four at-bats (actually five), you definitely want to take advantage of it," he said. "I got a pitch I could handle and was able to slap it to a good place."

Junior Spivey had three RBI for the Diamondbacks, who have won 10 of their last 14.

Chris Stynes and Mark Bellhorn each drove in two runs for Colorado, which has lost seven of 11.

Oscar Villarreal (10-7) got two outs for the win, and Matt Mantei pitched the ninth for his 28th save in 31 chances.

Miguel Batista allowed six hits and four runs in 5 1-3 innings.

Rockies starter Scott Elarton went four innings, allowing five hits and four runs, two of them earned.

"Today, basically, was pretty much a microcosm of our entire season," Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said. "We battled, we tried hard, but we don't win."

Stynes' two-run double keyed a five-run sixth that put Colorado ahead 7-6.

Kit Pellow led off with a triple and scored on Juan Uribe's double. Mark Bellhorn drew a walk off Eddie Oropesa, and Stynes doubled to right-center. Todd Helton was intentionally walked, and Preston Wilson hit an RBI double off Edgar Gonzalez.

Larry Walker was intentionally walked, and Jay Payton drove in the fifth run on a fielder's-choice grounder.

Arizona tied it in the seventh when Danny Bautista doubled and scored on pinch-hitter Carlos Baerga's single.

Arizona capitalized on a defensive lapse and Elarton's wildness to score three runs, just one earned, in the first.

After second baseman Bellhorn booted Alex Cintron's potential double-play grounder for an error, allowing a run to score, Bautista followed with a sacrifice fly and Lyle Overbay with an RBI single.

Spivey's sacrifice fly made it 4-0 in the fourth.

Bellhorn's two-out, two-run single cut the deficit to 4-2 in the Rockies' half.

Spivey hit a two-run single in the sixth to put Arizona up 6-2. After Counsell walked, McCracken hit a dribbler in front of the mound. Pitcher Aaron Cook threw wild to first for an error, with Counsell moving to third and McCracken to second. Spivey then singled up the middle.

Game notes

The Rockies drew 11 walks, giving them a franchise-record 608 for the season. The old record was 601 in 2000. ... In their final home game, the Rockies took their traditional tour of the perimeter of the field, saluting their fans and tossing hats, batting gloves and other memorabilia into the crowd. ... Arizona won the season series 10-9. ... Villarreal's 10th win set an Arizona record for most wins by a reliever.
