PITTSBURGH (Ticker) -- Oliver Perez's first appearance against
his former team quickly turned sour.
Perez struggled in the first inning and was outdueled by former
teammate Jake Peavy as the San Diego Padres completed a
doubleheader sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates with a 7-3 victory.Acquired in late August in a deal that sent All-Star outfielder
Brian Giles to San Diego, Perez (3-2) quickly found himself in
trouble against his old team. He issued three walks and was hurt
by a pair of errors in the first inning, when the Padres scored
four times.Perez went three innings and gave up four unearned runs and two
hits. The 22-year-old lefthander walked four, struck out five
and departed after throwing 77 pitches.Peavy (4-2) had no such problems as he allowed one run and five
hits in six innings, lowering his ERA to 2.01. He walked one
and struck out nine.Ramon Hernandez belted a long two-run homer and Mark Loretta had
a solo shot for Padres, who posted a 6-3 win in the opener.Daryle Ward hit a solo homer for Pittsburgh, which has lost six
straight at home and fell to just 4-12 at PNC Park.
