PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- With only pride and second place at stake,
the Philadelphia Phillies are playing their best.
"It's unfortunate we're out of it because we're playing real
good," Burrell said.
The Phillies (84-75) moved two games ahead of the defending
World Series champion Marlins for second place in the NL East as
both teams finish out their disappointing seasons.
The Marlins dominated the series during the last two seasons,
winning 14 of 15, before the Phillies snapped a 14-game losing
streak at Pro Player Stadium with a three-game sweep in Miami last
The Phillies, picked by many to win the NL East in spring
training, were hurt by inconsistency early in the season and a rash
of injuries, especially to their pitching staff. Their 19-8 record
this month is second only to Houston (20-7) in the majors.
"Obviously we're not where we want to be, but (second place) is
better than fourth or fifth," Phillies manager Larry Bowa said.
"You try to set goals as high as you can, but if that's not
attainable, you drop them."
Polanco followed with a tying RBI single off Mota's glove.
Polanco stole second, Bobby Abreu walked and both advanced on David
Bell's sacrifice bunt. Mota (9-8) struck out Jason Michaels, but
Burrell lined a two-run single to center to give the Phillies a 6-4
lead. Mike Lieberthal added an RBI single to make it 7-4.
"A tough loss most definitely," Willis said. "They battled

Michaels' two-out infield single scored Polanco to cut it to 4-1
in the sixth. Shortstop Alex Gonzalez double-clutched after
fielding the grounder, allowing Michaels to beat the throw.
"You bring in your best reliever and it didn't work out,"
Marlins manager Jack McKeon said.
