After spending 13 seasons in the minor leagues, the 32-year-old outfielder was called up by Los Angeles from Triple-A Salt Lake on Thursday. Though he wasn't in the starting lineup, he looked forward to watching his first game as a major-league player from the dugout."I'm feeling good," Prieto said before he took batting practice on Friday. "I'll sure remember Detroit, that's for sure."He said he never gave up his dream during his various stops in the minors."I love the game too much," said Prieto, who is listed at 5-11 and 185 pounds. "I enjoy playing too much. There are always times you get frustrated. But you remember why you play the game."Angels manager Mike Scioscia said Prieto deserves to be in the majors."I think it's a great story of how Chris persevered," he said. "But he put himself in a position to do it."Prieto will have to wait until Saturday, when the teams play a doubleheader to make up for the rainout. The first game will begin at 1:05 p.m.Friday's scheduled starters, Bartolo Colon (4-3, 2.83 ERA) for Los Angeles and Jeremy Bonderman (5-2, 3.47), will face each other in Game 1. Game 2 will feature Jarrod Washburn (2-1, 4.07) for the Angels against Mike Maroth (3-2, 3.83).Bonderman and Maroth will try to continue Detroit's run of good pitching. The Tigers have cut down on their walks and received quality starts in 11 of the last 17 games. The pitching was particularly impressive on the recent road trip through Los Angeles and Texas."This has been a good streak," Tigers manager Alan Trammell said. "Obviously, you don't want to walk six or seven guys."The Tigers placed outfielder Bobby Higginson on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 6, because of a sore right elbow. The team also purchased the contract of reliever Doug Creek from Triple-A Toledo. ... Angels center fielder Steve Finley was scheduled to serve as the DH in Friday night's game because of a sore groin. Scioscia said he would see how much progress Finley has made by Saturday before
deciding whether he will serve as the DH or play center field in those games or if he will play in one or both of the contests.
