DETROIT (AP) -- The Detroit Tigers used a team effort to end
their losing streak.
Chris Shelton homered and drove in three runs, Placido Polanco
added two RBI and Detroit snapped a five-game skid with a 10-7
victory over the Seattle Mariners."We swung the bats and got a lot of contributions from a lot of
different guys," Tigers manager Alan Trammell said. "We did just
enough."Adrian Beltre homered and drove in four runs for Seattle.Mike Maroth (9-11) got the win. He allowed five runs and seven
hits over six-plus innings, walking one and striking out three."I had pretty good stuff," Maroth said. "I don't think the
line is very impressive, but we won the game. That's what's
important."Maroth departed after a leadoff single by Jeremy Reed in the
seventh. Franklyn German set down the next three batters. The Mariners scored two in the eighth after German loaded the
bases. Chris Spurling gave up a run-scoring single to Beltre and an
RBI fielder's choice to Mike Morse.Fernando Rodney escaped further damage by striking out Reed and
getting Yuniesky Betancourt to fly out. Rodney finished for his
fourth career save and first this season, retiring Richie Sexson
with two on to end it.Gil Meche (10-8) allowed eight runs, seven earned, and nine hits
in 4 2/3 innings with three walks."Had the hardest time trying to locate my fastball tonight,"
Meche said. "I was being too aggressive with it. If I can't make
that pitch, you can see the outcome."Detroit got off to a quick start against Meche with four runs in
the first inning.Shelton doubled in two, Magglio Ordonez hit a run-scoring single
and Craig Monroe added a sacrifice fly."To come out and score four runs was big," Shelton said.
"Because we know Mike is going to give us six or seven good
innings."Seattle made it 4-3 in the fourth on Beltre's three-run shot on
Maroth's first pitch. His 14th homer of the season and second in
two nights also scored Willie Bloomquist and Sexson."Especially with a four-run lead, I wanted to go right at
him," Maroth said. "Actually, it was a pretty good pitch."The Tigers added five in the fifth to send Meche to the showers."He threw the ball well, but just couldn't get it together,"
Seattle pitching coach Bryan Price said. "After giving up four in
the first, he settled down and kept us in the game until the
five-run fifth."Ivan Rodriguez doubled in a run, and Dmitri Young had an RBI
single. With two outs, Polanco drove in two with a bases-loaded
single, and Carlos Guillen added a run-scoring single. The Mariners came back in the sixth with two runs on a sacrifice
fly by Sexson and a run-scoring single by Morse.Shelton connected in the eighth off Masao Kida, making it 10-7.

Tacoma and he made his major league debut. He allowed a run and two
hits in 1 2-3 innings. Nageotte took the roster spot of RHP Jorge
Campillo, who was placed on the disabled list with an elbow injury.
