DENVER (AP) -- Dustan Mohr finally delivered the hit that his manager had been waiting for.
Mohr homered with two outs in the 11th inning Monday to give the Colorado Rockies a 4-3 victory over the Florida Marlins in the first game of a doubleheader."We had been looking for that big hit, big swing for quite some time," Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said. "I was looking for that at-bat since the fourth inning."In the second game, Danny Ardoin hit a tiebreaking two-run homer, Byung-Hyun Kim won for the first time in seven starts and the Rockies completed a doubleheader sweep with a 5-3 victory.The Rockies stranded 10 runners after the fourth, including leaving the bases loaded in the 10th.Mohr struck out in his first two at-bats before connecting on an 0-2 pitch off Valerio De Los Santos (1-1). Scott Dohmann (1-1) pitched two scoreless innings to earn his first major-league win.The doubleheader was scheduled to make up games postponed by rain and snow April 27-28.The Rockies failed to score against Guillermo Mota despite putting two runners on with one out in the ninth and loading the bases in the 10th.Chris Aguila had two hits and Matt Treanor drove in two runs for the Marlins, who began the day two games behind idle Houston in the NL wild-card race.Josh Beckett threw 110 pitches in six innings, allowing two runs and seven hits. He struck out three, walked two and hit a batter."If you don't want the bullpen to give up anything then you have to go nine innings," Beckett said.Neither De Los Santos nor manager Jack McKeon was available between games.Florida took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on two-out singles by Aguila and Alex Gonzalez and Treanor's double to left-center.Two-out RBI singles by Ryan Shealy and Cory Sullivan tied it at 2 in the fourth.Jeff Conine drew a leadoff walk off Marcos Carvajal in the sixth inning, stole second and moved to third on Mike Lowell's bloop single to right. He scored when Aguila hustled to beat the relay throw on a double-play groundball.Ardoin's one-out squeeze bunt in the eighth scored Sullivan and tied it at 3. Ron Villone's three-base throwing error on Sullivan's bunt set up the play."It was a perfect bunt," Hurdle said. "I didn't choose the squeeze until it was 2-1."Sunny Kim allowed two runs and five hits in the first four innings in his first start since the Rockies claimed him off waivers from Washington.According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Sunny Kim and Byung-Hyun Kim became the first players with the same last name to start each end of a doubleheader since brothers Gaylord and Jim Perry did it for Cleveland on June 22, 1974, at Boston.
