ARIZONA 3, SAN DIEGO 2

SAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- Orlando Hernandez may not be the same
pitcher he once was, but the San Diego Padres certainly must be
impressed.

Hernandez worked six outstanding innings and Shawn Green had
three hits as the Arizona Diamondbacks posted a 3-2 victory to
complete a three-game sweep of the Padres.

A key contributor on three World Series championship clubs with
the New York Yankees, Hernandez (2-3) had lost his previous
three outings.

But the 40-year-old Cuban righthander was dazzling in his first
career start against San Diego, baffling the Padres with an
array of offspeed pitches. He allowed only one run, two hits
and two walks with a season-high nine strikeouts.

Luis Vizcaino and Brandon Lyon each tossed a scoreless inning
out of the bullpen and Jose Valverde logged the ninth to record
his fifth save.

Arizona took the lead for good in the sixth when Conor Jackson
snapped a 1-1 tie by blasting a solo homer off San Diego starter
Woody Williams (1-1). It was the third homer this season for
Jackson, who had four hits and five RBI in the series.

Chris Snyder ripped a double to plate Green with an insurance
run in the eighth for the Diamondbacks, who have won six of
their last nine.

The Padres halved their deficit in the ninth when Mike Piazza
crushed his 400th career homer, a solo shot off Valverde. But
Valverde struck out Adrian Gonzalez to end the contest.
