Yankees 11 , Mets 8

NEW YORK (AP) -- While the Mets and Yankees are heading in opposite directions, Tom Glavine remains stuck on 295 wins.

Derek Jeter hit a go-ahead homer, Alex Rodriguez also connected and the New York Yankees roughed up Glavine in an 11-8 victory over the slumping Mets on Saturday to even their second Subway Series of the season at one game apiece.

"It was a big win for us," Jeter said. "You want to get back on the right track."

Jeter finished with four hits and the Yankees got a big effort from their bullpen in winning for the 10th time in 11 tries. Robinson Cano and No. 9 batter Miguel Cairo each knocked in two runs, helping the Bronx Bombers improve to 2-3 against their city neighbors this year.

The Mets, who beat Roger Clemens 2-0 on Friday night to end a five-game skid, have lost 10 of 12 overall.

The NL East leaders mounted a rally against Mariano Rivera in the ninth and scored twice -- the first runs he's allowed in 10 appearances.

Jose Reyes, a switch-hitter, batted from the right side against the right-hander and cut it to 11-8 with an RBI single. But Carlos Beltran popped up foul with the bases loaded for the final out, finishing 0-for-6.

Chien-Ming Wang will start the series finale Sunday night against ex-Yankee Orlando Hernandez.

Making his fifth attempt at win No. 296, Glavine (5-5) failed to hold three early leads. He was tagged for seven runs and eight hits in four-plus innings, his second consecutive poor outing.

"I think this is just a temporary thing," teammate Shawn Green said. "He's pitched well most of the season and we'll get him those five wins and hopefully a lot more."

Glavine has allowed 16 runs and 19 hits over 8 1/3 innings in his past two starts, against the Tigers and Yankees. The 41-year-old left-hander is 0-4 in five outings since beating the Yankees on May 19 at Shea Stadium.

"No, I'm not depressed, frustrated. I've had two bad games," Glavine said. "It's not fun going through it, but it's part of the process.

"It's more mechanics than anything else," he added. "I haven't had that feel I want out there on the mound."

Luis Vizcaino (3-1) replaced rookie Tyler Clippard in the fourth and pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings for the win. Scott Proctor, Kyle Farnsworth and Rivera held the Mets in check the rest of the way.

Clippard was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after the game, and outfielder Kevin Thompson was recalled. Left-hander Kei Igawa will likely be brought up from the minors to pitch in San Francisco next weekend, the next time the Yankees need a fifth starter.

"I knew I had to have a good one today in order for me to stay here," Clippard said. "Just didn't happen."

Reyes created more havoc on the bases for the Mets, who got home runs from backups Ruben Gotay and Ramon Castro. They scored in each of the first four innings.

After play was delayed 40 minutes by rain in the top of the sixth, Mets cleanup hitter Carlos Delgado singled in his final two at-bats to end an 0-for-14 slide. He also made a costly error at first base.

The Mets stole five bases for the second consecutive game and third time this season against the Yankees.

Jeter also doubled and singled twice, finishing 4-for-5 with two runs and a stolen base.

"I don't think anyone can get a full appreciation for him unless they see him play every day," Johnny Damon said.

Reyes manufactured two early runs. With two outs in the third, he scurried down the line and distracted Clippard, who balked.

It was the second time in three weeks that Reyes got a pitcher flustered and scored on a balk. He also went 3-for-3 with a walk and three stolen bases Friday night, hitting a homer off Clemens and driving in both runs.

"He's one of my favorite players to watch," Jeter said.

Rodriguez's two-run drive in the third made it 4-3 Yankees, giving him a major league-best 26 homers and 70 RBIs. He has seven home runs in his last 13 games and 23 RBIs in his past 11.

"It seems like he's scuffling," Jeter joked. "He's swinging the bat as good as I've seen anyone swing the bat."

Clippard walked Green in the fourth, got a visit from pitching coach Ron Guidry and on the next pitch gave up a two-run shot to Castro that put the Mets back ahead. Vizcaino relieved with two on and prevented further damage.

Glavine failed to hold the lead again. Jeter's two-run homer put the Yankees up for good, 6-5, and Jorge Posada chased the left-hander with a leadoff double in the fifth.

Run-scoring singles by Cano and Cairo off Scott Schoeneweis made it 8-5, and Hideki Matsui added a two-out, two-run single off Guillermo Mota in the sixth.

Damon was back in the leadoff spot at DH after being scratched from the lineup Friday night with a mild abdominal strain. ... Mets 3B David Wright extended his hitting streak to 17 games with a first-inning RBI single. He is 16-for-16 on stolen bases this year and has been successful on 19 straight attempts dating to last season.
