W: M. Cain (4-12)
L: T. Redding (1-3)
|
• Summary: In his first at-bat since becoming home run king, Barry Bonds sent a 1-1 pitch from Washington's Tim Redding into McCovey Cove as the Giants shut out the Nationals 5-0.
• Helping his cause: Giants starter Matt Cain hit his first career home run and overran first base before tapping his left foot on the bag and taking off on his trot. • Repeat performance? When Bonds broke Mark McGwire's single-season record with No. 71 in 2001, he homered again in his next at-bat to increase that record just like he did Wednesday. • Figure this: Giants manager Bruce Bochy became the 55th skipper in major league history to reach the 1,000 win mark. He is sixth among active managers. • Quotable: "That was a great swing. That's the swing we all know. I think last night with the home run it did take a load off him. He can relax a little bit. He can still flat out do things no other player can do, and he showed it tonight." -- Bochy on Bonds-- ESPN.com news services |
