MINNEAPOLIS -- Growing up in Scarborough, Ontario, George Kottaras was one of the few youngsters in his neighborhood who didn't play hockey.
Why Slowey Won
• Kevin Slowey was able to get ahead of hitters, throwing a first pitch strike 85 percent of the time. And he finished off hitters once he got ahead, retiring all who had a two-strike count.
• Even when Slowey got behind a hitter, he was able to get them out. Against players who worked a 2-0, 2-1 or 3-0 count, Slowey retired 75 percent (the MLB average is 54 percent). Hitters with those counts were 1-for-7 with one walk.
• All five of Slowey's strikeouts were swinging.
