W: B. Morrow (9-6)
L: A. Sonnanstine (2-1)
TORONTO -- Brandon Morrow wasn't about to hang his head after coming inches away from a no-hitter. The Blue Jays pitcher still tossed his first shutout -- first complete game, in fact -- and struck out a career-high 17 batters.
"Those things combined were more than enough to overcome the feeling of the missed no-hitter," said Morrow, who allowed only Evan Longoria's single with two outs in the ninth inning of a 1-0 victory over Tampa Bay on Sunday. "That would have been a great feat, but I'll start at a complete-game, one-hit shutout with 17 strikeouts."Longoria said that Morrow deserved the no-hitter, with the way he was mixing a devastating breaking pitch and a mid-90s fastball to plow through the Rays' batting order.Great Expectations

Brandon Morrow struggled early in his career. But the No. 5 overall pick in 2006 has showed signs that he's finally putting it all together. He was simply dominant in Sunday's near no-hitter, writes Buster Olney. Blog

Almost History

Brandon Morrow joined an elite group of Blue Jays pitchers who have lost no-hitters -- and he's the only pitcher to hold teams hitless through five innings three times this season. ESPN's Stats and Information Group breaks down the history Morrow made (and almost made). Blog

Research Notes
From Elias: FROM ELIAS:
Only twice in the MODERN ERA (since 1900) has a team been held to one hit or fewer in more than 5 games in a season. In 1910, the White Sox and Brown both had 6 such games.
------------------------
The Rays have now been held to one hit or fewer in 5 games this season. That is the most such games in a single season in the live ball era (since 1920). 11 other teams have 4 such games in a season. The only two others since 1992 are the Rangers last season and the Padres in 2001. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
On Saturday, the Blue Jays beat the Rays 17-11 as the teams combined for 28 runs. On Sunday, the Blue Jays beat the Rays 1-0.
That ties the all-time record for most combined runs by 2 teams who went on to play a 1-0 game in their next matchup. On May 28, 1939, the Dodgers beat the Braves 16-12 and then they won 1-0 the following day. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The Jays Brandon Morrow has now won four straight starts, with all four coming against AL East opponents. He's the third pitcher since 2006 with such a streak and the first since Roy Halladay in 2008 (Halladay won five straight starts, with all five against AL East teams, Aug. 16-Sept. 5.) | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Brandon Morrow becomes the 3rd pitcher in Blue Jays history to lose a no-hitter with 2 outs in the 9th inning -- but it was the 5th occurrence. Dave Stieb had it happen to him 3 times in a 12-month span, and in back-to-back starts to end the 1988 season. [+]No-Hitters Lost in Blue Jays History - 2 Outs in 9th Inning

According to Bill James' metric "Game Score," which is a one number-summary of how good a pitcher's single-game performance is, Brandon Morrow's 17-strikeout, 2-walk, one-hitter on Sunday - which got a score of 100 - is tied for the 4th-best single-game pitching performance since 1920. It was the highest by any pitcher in a single game since Randy Johnson scored 100 in his perfect game back in 2004. [+]Highest Pitcher Game Score in 9-Inning Game - Since 1920
