ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Cliff Lee added another impressive line to his spectacular October resume, and now the Texas Rangers will play for the AL pennant.
Lee tossed his latest postseason gem and Texas won a playoff series for the first time, beating the Tampa Bay Rays 5-1 Tuesday night in a decisive Game 5 on the legs of some daring baserunning.More From ESPN.com

Lee has held batters to a .185 average in postseason play. He has four postseason games with at least 10 strikeouts and no walks. No other pitcher has more than one. ... This was the first time a division series went the full five games since the Los Angeles Angels beat the Yankees in 2005.

Research Notes
How David Price came up short against the Rangers again:
- In his prior two starts against Texas this season, Price tried to attack with fastballs, specifically high fastballs. He threw more high fastballs in each of those two starts than any other start all year. In Game 1, it came back to bite him. In Game 5, he changed up his game plan.
- Price threw 29 curveballs, third-most this season and far more than the 16 he threw in Game 1. Despite his best attempt to keep the Rangers off balance, he had little success with the pitch, leaving too many over the plate. The Rangers were 4-for-8 off his curveball, including three hits with two strikes and two by Ian Kinsler. Texas missed on just one of its 12 swings against Price's curve.
- Price had two mental lapses while covering first, letting a runner score from second on an infield out on two separate occasions. According to Elias, it was the first time in postseason history that's happened in a postseason game.
Cliff Lee's CG rated an 82 via the next-level metric Game Score.
It was the 5th game score this postseason of 80 or better.
That ties an all-time record for a single postseason, previously set in 1967 (5 in a 7-game World Series)and 1997.
Lee's 82 rated tied for the fourth-best in a winner-take-all game in postseason history, trailing only Sandy Koufax (1965 Dodgers, 88), Jack Morris (1991 Twins, 84), Ralph Terry (1962 Yankees, 83). It tied John Smoltz (1991 Braves, 82) [+]Highest Game Score

How Cliff Lee beat the Rays again, giving the Rangers their first postseason series win:
- For the first three innings, Lee stuck to his Game 1 plan: Pound the plate with 4-seam fastballs. He threw his 4-seamer 73 percent of the time in the Game 1, and 64 percent of the time through the first three innings. The difference was command. For the first three innings, that fastball went for strikes only 59 percent of the time, compared to 76 percent in Game 1. He threw first pitch-strikes to only six of the first 13 batters he faced, including just three of nine with his 4-seamer. The pitcher who led all of baseball with a 69.5 first-pitch strike percentage wasn't getting ahead. So, Lee adjusted.
- After the first time through the order, Lee changed his approach: Get ahead with the cutter and finish them off with the curveball. From the fourth on, he threw first-pitch strikes to 16 of 20 hitters, including eight of 11 on his cutter. He didn't throw a curveball the first time through the order, but threw a season-high 19 - including 14 with two strikes - from the second time on. He threw six curves alone in the fifth inning, one short of how many he threw in all of Game 1. He had a season-high five strikeouts on his curveball.
