Yankee Stadium, New York, NY
NEW YORK -- The Yankees lost their ace for at least a couple of weeks and their most dependable veteran for about a couple of months. For a team that's already lost two key pitchers to injuries for the season, the news could have been worse.
It was bad enough even before Andy Pettitte fractured his fibula near his left ankle on the same day the Yankees put CC Sabathia on the 15-day disabled list with a strained groin. Robinson Cano hit a go-ahead homer to help New York beat the Cleveland Indians 5-4 Wednesday for a three-game sweep."No one's going to feel sorry for us," manager Joe Girardi said.Yankees blog

Game notes
The Indians claimed former Mets utility player Vinny Rottino off waivers from New York, which designated him for assignment on Monday. He hit .182 with a double, two homers and 5 RBIs in 18 games with the Mets. Cleveland made room for him on the 40-man roster by designating RHP Chris Schwinden for assignment. Schwinden had appeared for the Mets earlier this season, but had been claimed previously by the Blue Jays before the Indians. ... New York Giants coach Tom Coughlin will throw out the first pitch on Saturday against the White Sox. ... Indians C Carlos Santana, who was the DH on Wednesday, was pinch-hit for in the ninth because his back tightened up.

Research Notes
The Yankees are in a bind as their best two starters land on the shelf in a matter of 24 hours. Pettitte and Sabathia have combined for an ERA more than a FULL run lower than the rest of the rotation. The Bombers have won more than 70 percent of the games the two have started, but fewer than 60 percent the rest of the year. [+]Yankees Starting Pitchers This Season
