W: C. Sabathia (15-6)
L: C. Buchholz (11-8)
NEW YORK -- Robinson Cano, Curtis Granderson, Russell Martin and Mark Teixeira stepped up to the plate, sent the ball over the wall and circled the bases like a conga line in a nine-run second inning.
With record-tying power backing a superb start by CC Sabathia, the New York Yankees have first place all to themselves with two games to go and hope they'll have a real party before this series against the Boston Red Sox is over."There's a lot of teams that would love to be in our position right now," Teixeira said after the Yankees routed the Red Sox 10-2 on Monday night to open a one-game lead over Baltimore in the AL East. "You can count all of the things that have gone wrong but, hey, we're right here where we want to be. And if we keep winning, we'll be division champions and have a chance to make a run in the playoffs."More From ESPNNewYork.com
Robinson Cano has taken over the Yankees' offense. He is on one of those magical runs, when an athlete's singular talent is at a higher level against the world's best competition, writes Andrew Marchand.

Research Notes
Clay Buchholz allows a career-high 8 ER (ties career high with 8 runs allowed)...
FROM ELIAS: He's the ONLY starter in Red Sox history to allow 8 ER in fewer than 2 IP against the Yankees. Josh Beckett is the only other starter to allow 8 runs (7 earned runs) in fewer than 2 IP (1.1) against the Yankees (June 5, 2006).
The last Red Sox starter to do it against any team was John Burkett more than 10 years ago (8 ER in 1.1 IP on August 1, 2002 vs Rangers).
Buchholz posted a 5.62 ERA in his final 8 starts of the season (Red Sox are 1-6 in his past 7 starts). |
From Elias: This is the 3rd time in Yankee history they have hit 4 HR in an inning. It also happened June 21, 2005 vs Rays and June 30, 1977 at Blue Jays (both 4 HR). |
