Texas 7, Detroit 3


ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- Rafael Palmeiro hit a three-run homer
and Alex Rodriguez had a two-run shot as the Texas Rangers beat the
Detroit Tigers 7-3 Wednesday night.

Palmeiro's 29th homer in the second inning gave the Rangers a
6-1 lead. Rodriguez's 32nd put Texas ahead 2-0 in the first.

R.A. Dickey (7-5) allowed three runs and seven hits over six
innings to win his third straight start. He struck out three and
walked two.

Francisco Cordero entered the ninth with one out and two runners
on base. After an out, he walked Alex Sanchez to load the bases and
then got Warren Morris to hit a grounder to first for his ninth

Michael Young went 3-for-4 for the Rangers, who've won eight of
12 in August and are 26-20 since June 24.

Carlos Pena homered for the Tigers, who've lost 20 of their last

The Rangers took a 3-0 lead in the first as Tigers starter Mike
Maroth (6-17) threw 41 pitches. Young doubled and Rodriguez hit his
seventh homer in 12 games in August.

Palmeiro followed with his second triple in a week after not
getting one since 2000. He scored on Hank Blalock's bloop single.

Detroit made it 3-1 in the second on Brandon Inge's RBI single.

In the Texas second, Young and Mark Teixeira singled, and
Palmeiro hit the 519th homer of his career.

Pena's 12th homer leading off the fourth and Bobby Higginson's
RBI single in the fifth reduced the Rangers' lead to 6-3.

Maroth allowed six runs and eight hits over five innings as he
lost for the fourth time in five decisions.

Blalock's double drove in Marcus Thames from first base in the
sixth to extend Texas' advantage to 7-3.

Game notes
Young had his 151th hit in the first inning, one more than
he had last season. Young has 50 multihit games. ... The game
started 27 minutes late due to rain, and light rain continued to
fall throughout the game. ... Texas RF Juan Gonzalez has undergone
a battery of tests on the strained right calf that has kept him on
the DL since July 23. Team medical personnel will evaluate the
results on Thursday and could determine when or if Gonzalez can
play again this season. ... The temperature at the game's start was
an unseasonably cool 75. ... The Rangers hit for the cycle --
single, double, triple and homer -- in the first inning. ... Rangers
RHP Ismael Valdes retired all 18 batters he faced in a rehab start
for Double-A Frisco. Valdes has been on the disabled list since
July 24 due to knee tendinitis.
