DENVER (AP) -- Brad Hawpe stopped swinging for the fences and ended up with the first multihomer game of his career."Basically all I did in early work was just more or less swinging half-speed, worked on just trying to get the bat head out and not trying to drive the ball," said Hawpe, who homered twice and drove in four runs to lead Aaron Cook and the Colorado Rockies past the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-3 on Wednesday night.Hawpe overshadowed the solid major league debut of Diamondbacks third baseman Mark Reynolds, who went 2-for-3 and doubled home two runs with his first major league hit. Both of Hawpe's homers -- his second and third of the season -- came off Brandon Webb (3-3), last year's Cy Young award winner. The first home run, over the scoreboard in right field, was a solo shot off an inside fastball that made it 2-0 in the fourth. He hit the second over the left-field wall, a three-run homer in the sixth that broke a 2-2 tie."The second one was a decent pitch," Webb said. "Especially after I went in on him and he hit the home run to right off a fastball. The second one was a changeup off the plate on 3-2 when got me to left. Take him out of the lineup and it will be all right. He's killing me."Both of Hawpe's homers came with two outs."I thought I went about pitching him the way we wanted to," Webb said. "I threw a fastball, curveball, threw the whole book at him. I'll pitch him a different way the next time I face him. He's a low-ball hitter who has a lot of power to left field. That's why it surprised me that he turned on the fastball on the first home run."Arizona manager Bob Melvin was incredulous Hawpe was able to hit the full-count changeup over the left-field wall: "That was a great at-bat," Melvin said."I tell you, I was just trying to put the bat on the ball right there," Hawpe said. "Webb's good. He's tough. He throws a pitch out there away from me, I'm thinking, 'Just flip it the other way."He did and suddenly, his power slump was history.Hawpe joined Ray Durham (July 24, 2003) as the only players ever to hit two homers off Webb in one game.Cook (3-1) allowed three earned runs and five hits in six-plus innings for his third straight win. He didn't walk a batter but hit two with pitches, including Scott Hairston in the right wrist in the seventh. Hairston went for X-rays after the game.Cook didn't allow a hit until Eric Byrnes led off the fifth with a single to right. One out later, Reynolds, hours after being called up from Double-A Mobile, doubled off the wall in center to drive in two runs and tie it at 2."I guess I deserved it," Cook said. "In spring training he went 0-for-2 against me with two strikeouts, so he got me today."Cook was replaced by right-hander Ramon Ramirez with runners at the corners and no outs in the seventh. Ramirez, fresh off the 15-day DL, got out of the jam after allowing pinch-hitter Miguel Montero's line-drive sacrifice fly to center that made it 5-3.Brian Fuentes pitched the ninth for his 10th save in 11 chances."It was a good ballgame for us," said Rockies manager Clint Hurdle, who has seen his team struggle all season on the mound and at the plate. "We got what we needed from Cook and the bullpen. It was a good night for Brad; it was a step in the right direction. Different people contributed tonight, some different people can contribute tomorrow, and we can go out and win a series."Webb allowed five runs, four earned, and six hits in six innings. He had a rough start, tossing Todd Helton's comebacker into center field and allowing Willy Taveras to score from second base. The Diamondbacks placed third baseman Chad Tracy on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a strained left rib cage and promoted Reynolds to take his roster spot. Reynolds got the nod because Brian Barden is injured at Triple-A."He had a great night offensively and defensively," Melvin said. "It goes a long way soothing the nerves when you get your first hit."
Webb has a 7.00 ERA in three starts against the Rockies this season. ... Byrnes has hit in 10 straight games. ... Cook's three-game winning streak matches the longest of his career.
