| | | Former home run king Mark McGwire retired after 16 seasons. |
Nobody ever hit home runs with the frequency of Mark McGwire. Nobody ever hit them as far. And after 583 of them, McGwire has decided to retire. Slowed by knee injuries the past two years, McGwire said, "After considerable discussion with those closest to me, I have decided not to sign the extension, as I am unable to perform at a level equal to the salary the organization would be paying me." He retires fifth on the all-time home run list and among the greatest first basemen in baseball history.
