In his first AB back from suspension, Manny Machado got a robust round of applause from Orioles fans. Then he promptly proceeded to hit the ball over the left centerfield wall. Unfortunately for him, centerfielder Desmond Jennings brought it back in.

Patience is a virtue for Boston

The Red Sox have been down on their luck, losing three of their left fielders to injury in the past month. In time, minor leaguer Andrew Benintendi may be the answer. Story

Of all the places for Oswaldo Arcia to land... Tampa? In that park? That diminishes, somewhat, my enthusiasm for a new-surroundings breakthrough. Also, great, now the Rays have two Corey Dickersons.

Andrew Benintendi wasn't considered to take the place of injured Chris Young, according to Dave Dombrowski. As a matter of course, Dombrowski isn't opposed to calling up players directly from Double-A, but Sox don't believe Benintendi is ready from offensive standpoint.

John Farrell on the struggles of setup men Koji Uehara and Junichi Tazawa: "They've been so good for us over a long period of time, we're not going to run from them." Both relievers are working through some things mechanically. And while neither is going to be removed from late-inning role, Farrell said Heath Hembree is meriting more high-leverage opportunities.

Dodgers starter Nick Tepesch has 39 big league starts, but if you don't know much about him, you're not alone. "Really, I don't know a whole lot about Nick," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. "I know he's a big guy, he's performed well here in Triple-A since we got him and he's made 39 starts so I'm as curious as everybody else is."

Brock Holt (concussion) will continue his Triple-A rehab assignment through the weekend, with a best-case scenario that he could rejoin Red Sox next week at Tampa Bay. Until Holt returns, Bryce Brentz will get the lion's share of the starts in left field, although Ryan LaMarre could be used late in games for defense.

The Mets and other teams have been allowed to speak to Jose Reyes' agents since he landed on release waivers on Thursday. The only prohibition is on talking terms of a contract until he becomes a free agent at 1 p.m. ET Saturday. But the terms are pretty much moot since every team would pay him the prorated MLB minimum.

The real Mark Trumbo (third from left, wearing black #Orioles pullover) looks on as 24 fake Mark Trumbos work out before tonight's O's/Rays opener. In honor of the Baltimore slugger, who's currently tied for the major-league lead in homers, all of his teammates - who got their schwag a little early in advance of this Sunday's Trumbo Tee Shirt day - rocked the giveaway during batting practice. Whether or not Trumbo was wearing his tee under the pullover remains a mystery.

Joe Girardi said " the plan" is for Mark Teixeira to rejoin the Yankees for Saturday's game, although there is a caveat: "Our plan is to give him today (off) to make sure that he's OK and then get him back in there tomorrow. " Teixeira, on the DL since June 4 with a cartilage tear in his right knee, just finished a 3-game rehab assignment for AAA Scranton, where he went 1-for-9 with a walk. Teixeira is hitting just .180 with 3 HRs and 12 RBI. "I know he's off to a slow start but I really don't think that's going to continue," Girardi said. "We expect him to be Mark."

Manny Machado returns to the field today for the Orioles following a four-game suspension for charging the mound after being hit by a 99 mile-an-hour fastball from Yordano Ventura. Asked whether he would respond differently if presented with the same situation, Machado said: "Would I take it back? No. I did what I need to do to be who I am."

The Mets have internally talked about several positions for Jose Reyes. That includes the outfield. They've also discussed a utility role and being primarily being a third baseman or second baseman.
