Tigers reliever Warwick Saupold gave up five straight hits to begin the sixth inning, as A's hammer him to gain a four-run edge. This after the Tigers knotted the score at the top of the frame. Kyle Ryan in the game now; surely there will be many wondering why Saupold wasn't pulled earlier.

Another bad outing for Michael Pineda, who lasted just 3-2/3 innings against the Rays today, allowing 6 earned runs on 9 hits, including Evan Longoria's mammoth 2-run HR in the second. Will be interesting to see if Pineda, who now has the worst ERA (6.92) of any qualifying starter in MLB, will remain in the Yankees rotation. Not a lot of alternatives on their roster or in AAA

Matt Carpenter's daughter, Kinley, was born at about 3 p.m. Wednesday, right about the time Jake Arrieta was coming out of his start at Busch Stadium. Carpenter said he didn't have to text Arrieta to let his former TCU teammate know he wasn't ducking him when he was not in the Cardinals' lineup that day. "He knew," Carpenter said. "He actually texted me at the hospital when he heard the news." Carpenter returned from the paternity list and was starting at first base Saturday in Washington. Moving around between third, second and first base could become commonplace for Carpenter when Jhonny Peralta returns from his minor-league rehabilitation assignment, perhaps as early as late next week. "You can just see how it's falling out. Jhonny's going to come back and decisions are going to have to be made," Carpenter said. "I give them some flexibility."

Yasiel Puig, who was not in the Dodgers' starting lineup Saturday, was receiving electronic stimulation to his right thigh in the clubhouse. Puig did walk off the field slowly Friday after chasing down a popup and making a catch at full speed along the RF foul line.

An auspicious beginning to LHP Matt Boyd's first MLB start of the season for Tigers. Boyd strikes out the side in the first inning.

Left-hander Alex Wood had a light outfield throwing session Saturday and said afterward he is good to go for his start Monday in Chicago. Wood was supposed to start Friday in New York but had the outing pushed back because of triceps soreness.

Odd start to the Tigers-A's game here at Oakland's Coliseum. Home plate umpire Andy Fletcher approached the mound after Jesse Hahn's first pitch. The A's starter, who began the game with one elbow sleeve, was made to put on another. Crowd booing heartily. And did so again after Hahn subsequently have up a leadoff single to Tigers second baseman Ian Kinsler.

David Wright out with neck issue. Unrelated to back. He also will sit Monday's day game assuming he can play on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball.
