The Mets starter allowed three runs and it would have been more had Kelly Johnson's relay not nailed Matt Adams at the plate. The Cardinals made Syndergaard work. He cleared 100 pitches through five innings for the first time in his career.

Tigers CF Cameron Maybin (back) will not play tonight. Tyler Collins will man centerfield in his place. Manager Brad Ausmus indicated that Tigers are likely to give Maybin Wednesday off as well, particularly with an off day on Thursday, unless he comes in tomorrow feeling "brand new." Maybin said he's just trying to err on the side of caution to ensure he can contribute in final two months of the season: "I have to not be selfish and do what's best for the team."
