The Kansas City Royals have signed Dominican prospect Adalberto Mondesi, a shortstop and the 16-year-old son of former major league outfielder Raul Mondesi.

Mondesi received a $2 million signing bonus, according to his father.

"The whole family is very happy for Adalberto, and all he wants to do is play baseball and follow in my footsteps," Raul Mondesi said by phone from Miami, where the Royals and the player reached the agreement. "If it was up to him, he would have signed for free."

Mondesi turned 16 on Wednesday to become eligible to sign a contract, but he will have to wait until 2012 to begin his professional career. Raul Mondesi said his son will debut in the Dominican Summer League next year.

"Mondesi runs well above the average major league player, his arm is average," a scout told ESPNdeportes.com. "He lacks power, but he is very athletic and has very fast hands."
