On the final day of the regular season, the two wild-card spots remain open, teams are still jockeying for position and no first-round matchups have been determined.

Wild-card tiebreaker scenarios
If the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays finish in a tie:
| Thursday: Boston at Tampa Bay, 4:07 p.m. ET (The Rays hold a 12-6 head-to-head edge) |
If the Atlanta Braves and St. Louis Cardinals finish in a tie:
| Thursday: Atlanta at St. Louis, 8:07 p.m. ET (The Cardinals hold a 5-1 head-to-head edge) |
American League

| 1. NY Yankees (97-64) | 3. Detroit (94-67) |
| 2. Texas (95-66) | 4. Boston/Tampa Bay (90-71) |
| First-round matchups: Boston/Tampa Bay at Texas; Detroit at NY Yankees | |
If Texas and Detroit finish with the same record:
| The Tigers would be the No. 2 seed; they hold a 6-3 head-to-head edge over the Rangers. |

National League
