K-Rod accepts arbitration from Brewers

DALLAS -- Francisco Rodriguez accepted Milwaukee's offer of salary arbitration, a move that could lead the Brewers to trade the reliever to a team seeking a closer.

K-Rod, who turns 30 next month, had 23 saves in 26 chances for the New York Mets during the first half of last season, then was traded to the Brewers during the All-Star break and didn't get another save. He served as a setup man for closer John Axford.

Agent Scott Boras said that accepting arbitration didn't necessarily mean Rodriguez would be with Milwaukee on opening day.

Milwaukee made the arbitration offer Nov. 23 and Rodriguez had until 11 p.m. CST Wednesday to accept. He had an $11.5 million salary last season, completing a three-year contract that paid him $38.1 million.

Barring an agreement, Rodriguez and the Brewers -- or the team acquiring him -- would swap proposed salaries on Jan. 17 for a one-year, non-guaranteed contract and the case would go to a hearing the following month. The overwhelming majority of players and teams reach agreement before cases are heard by three-arbitrator panels.
