Phillies sign Laynce Nix to 2-year deal
PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia Phillies have signed outfielder Laynce Nix to a $2.5 million, two-year contract.
Nix batted .250 with a career-high 16 home runs and 44 RBIs in 124 games for the Washington Nationals last season. He started 79 games, including 59 in left field, 12 in right field and six at first base. The 32-year-old Nix is a left-handed hitter.
The deal was announced Thursday night. Nix gets $1.15 million in 2012 and $1.35 million in 2013. He can earn additional performance bonuses.
Nix adds depth to a reshaped bench. The Phillies previously acquired Jim Thome and Ty Wigginton this offseason.
Nix was originally selected by the Texas Rangers in the fourth round of the 2000 draft. He has a .244 career batting average with 64 homers and 226 RBIs in 607 games for the Rangers (2003-06), Milwaukee Brewers (2006-08), Cincinnati Reds (2009-10) and Nationals (2011).
