The Phillies have agreed to a minor league contract with free-agent pitcher Joel Pineiro, according to a major league source. The deal includes an invitation to the Phillies' big league spring training camp.
The 33-year-old right-hander spent the past two seasons with the Angels. He went 7-7 with a 5.13 ERA last season and spent time on the disabled list because of shoulder tightness.
Pineiro had previously pitched for the Mariners, Red Sox and Cardinals. He has never allowed a run at Citizens Bank Park, in two career starts while pitching for the Cardinals in 2008 and '09.
The Phillies have been looking for starting pitching depth behind their projected rotation of Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, Cole Hamels, Joe Blanton and Vance Worley. Blanton was limited to eight starts and three relief appearances, totaling 41 1/3 innings, last season because of elbow tightness.
