HOUSTON -- The Houston Astros have placed shortstop Jed Lowrie on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained right thumb.
The Astros had hoped Lowrie would be ready for Opening Day on Friday against Colorado, but he wasn't quite healthy enough to play.
He was injured on March 28 and his time on the DL is backdated to March 29. He is eligible to come off the DL on April 13 and says he is confident he'll be able to play then.
Lowrie, who was traded to Houston from the Boston Red Sox in the offseason, hit .333 with two home runs and seven RBIs in 14 games this spring.
The Astros purchased the contract of infielder Brian Bixler to take Lowrie's spot on the roster.
