SS Jed Lowrie to be activated
HOUSTON -- The Houston Astros have optioned infielder Brian Bixler to Triple-A Oklahoma City to make room on the roster for shortstop Jed Lowrie, who will be reinstated from the disabled list on Friday.
Lowrie began the season on the 15-day disabled list after spraining his right thumb March 28. He played two rehabilitation games for Oklahoma City this week, going 3 for 6 with three RBIs.
Lowrie, who will be Houston's starting shortstop, joined the Astros in the offseason after a trade with the Boston Red Sox.
He hit .333 with two home runs and seven RBIs in 14 spring training games before his injury.
Bixler has appeared in five games with one start for Houston this season.
The Astros are off on Thursday before opening a series at Miami on Friday.
