CINCINNATI -- The Indians added right-handed reliever Esmil Rogers to their roster on Wednesday before a game against the Cincinnati Reds, giving Cleveland a full bullpen for the second game of the intrastate series.
Cleveland got Rogers from Colorado for cash on Tuesday. The 26-year-old reliever went 0-2 with an 8.06 ERA for the Rockies. Manager Manny Acta said the Indians are taking a chance on the hard-throwing pitcher, who has inconsistent control.
The Indians optioned infielder Matt LaPorta to Triple-A Columbus to open a roster spot.
LaPorta was called up on June 3 and appeared in three games, going 2 for 11. He opened the season at Columbus and batted .307 with 14 homers and 32 RBIs in 46 games.
