SEATTLE -- The Baltimore Orioles placed infielder Brian Roberts on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a strained right groin, retroactive to July 2. The Orioles recalled outfielder Xavier Avery from Triple-A Norfolk to replace him.
Roberts is hitting .182 in 17 games since making his return from a concussion June 12. The oft-injured Roberts had just 163 at-bats last season and 230 at-bats in 2010.
Avery is back with the Orioles for the third time. He's hit .222 in 18 games. Avery made his Major League debut with Baltimore on May 13.
