Cardinals activate Lance Berkman
CINCINNATI -- The St. Louis Cardinals activated first baseman Lance Berkman off the disabled list before the second game of their series against the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday.
Berkman had been sidelined since he tore cartilage in his right knee while stretching for a throw May 19. He had surgery and returned ahead of schedule. Berkman batted .333 but was limited to 13 games because of an injured calf and the knee.
The Cardinals plan to ease him back into a regular role. Berkman wasn't in the starting lineup Saturday -- Allen Craig was filling in there again.
St. Louis optioned outfielder Shane Robinson to Triple-A Memphis to open a roster spot. Robinson had a pinch RBI single in a 5-3 loss in the series opener on Friday night.
