SAN FRANCISCO -- Melky Cabrera has left the San Francisco Giants to attend the birth of his child in Florida.
Cabrera, the major league leader in hits and the MVP of last Tuesday night's All-Star Game, took a red-eye flight to Orlando following Saturday night's 3-2 extra-inning win over the Houston Astros. He's expected to rejoin the team in Atlanta on Tuesday.
Manager Bruce Bochy said Cabrera might be placed on the paternity list, which would give San Francisco a roster exemption for up to three days. The Giants may use that to activate Aubrey Huff from the disabled list.
Huff has been out since injuring his knee while celebrating Matt Cain's perfect game against Houston on June 13.
