DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers have designated utilityman Don Kelly for assignment to make room on the roster for outfielder Andy Dirks' return.
Dirks was activated from the disabled list Friday.
Kelly hit a big home run to help the Tigers eliminate the New York Yankees in last year's playoffs, but he's hitting only .175 in 2012, and not even his versatility could make up for that.
Dirks has been sidelined since May 31 with right Achilles tendinitis.
