Baker, who has played first base, second base and in the outfield this year, hit .269 in 54 games for the Cubs. He gives the Tigers some extra depth and another right-handed hitter.
His role likely will be similar to what Ryan Raburn was being asked to do. Raburn, who's hitting .172, was placed on the disabled list with a sprained right thumb Sunday.
Detroit general manager Dave Dombrowski said Sunday the Tigers had claimed Baker off waivers and were able to work out a deal with Chicago. He says Baker is a good fit for Detroit against left-handed pitching.
