ARLINGTON, Texas -- Infielder Sean Rodriguez won't be rejoining the Tampa Bay Rays later this week as expected after he broke his right hand while punching a locker at Triple-A Durham.
Rays manager Joe Maddon says that Rodriguez was very contrite and upset about his actions when the two shared texts.
Maddon said Tuesday it was unfortunate because Rodriguez was set to play for the Rays in Toronto this weekend.
Rodriguez, hitting .215 in 106 games for Tampa, was optioned to Durham on Aug. 21. Maddon said the plan was for Rodriguez to go down, work on some things and then rejoin the team.
There is a chance Rodriguez could be back before the end of the season, but Maddon says that's "no real great solace" now.
