Orioles activate Jim Thome from DL
Thome was batting .261 in 18 games for Baltimore before going on the DL on July 31 with a herniated disk in his neck. The Orioles had obtained him from the Philadelphia Phillies on June 30.
Patton, placed on the disabled list on Aug. 14 with a sprained right ankle, is 1-0 with a 2.58 ERA in 52 1/3 innings over 50 games this season. He hadn't allowed a run in 18 consecutive games before he was injured.
Meanwhile, pitcher Jason Hammel threw balls from halfway up the mound Friday, the Baltimore Sun reported. Hammel had not thrown downward since leaving his start with knee pain on Sept. 11.
"It's starting to feel really good, but I'm not going to get on a mound and throw another pitch until it feels normal," Hammel told the Sun. "I'm not going to risk further injury."
Hammel told the newspaper he is optimistic of returning this season.
