Youth is served as McCullers beats Yanks

Lance McCullers struck out 10 in the Astros' win over the Yankees on Wednesday. Over the last 40 years, only three pitchers have beaten the Yankees while recording 10 or more K's at a younger age than McCullers (22 years, 299 days old), the Elias Sports Bureau notes.

  • Moose Haas (21 years, 355 days on April 12, 1978)
  • Mark Prior (22 years, 274 days on June 8, 2003)
  • Matt Moore (22 years, 96 days on Sept. 22, 2011)

Luis Severino looked very good in his two scoreless innings of relief during the Yankees' 4-1 loss to the Astros. Severino, who began the year as a starter, could be part of the solution in replacing Aroldis Chapman. Severino could become a setup man. Long-term, though, Severino is supposed to be a future starter, which presents the same issues the Yankees have had in the recent past with guys like Joba Chamberlain and Phil Hughes.

Forties haven't been kind to A-Rod

Since he turned 40 years old on July 27 last year, Alex Rodriguez has been one of the worst hitters in the majors in terms of batting average.

Birthday boy Alex Rodriguez on still being on a major league roster: "When I first started to play this game, as a a young lad, I never thought I'd be playing in the major leagues for so long; especially at 41," A-Rod said. "I'm representing all the senior citizens." Rodriguez will start the game on the bench Wednesday for the fifth straight time.

Alex Rodriguez on turning 41: "I'm getting old," Rodriguez said. "It makes you feel grateful, not a lot of 41-year-olds get to wear a baseball uniform every day. That's one. I definitely feel grateful for health, family, friends and just the opportunity to wear pinstripes."

Yankees manager Joe Girardi is apparently not sentimental when it comes to birthdays. Alex Rodriguez turned 41 on Wednesday, but did not get a spot in the lineup against righty Lance McCullers. It is not a surprise as Girardi planned to DH Carlos Beltran all three games here in Houston. It is the fifth game in a row Rodriguez has been benched.

Small chance Yankees trade Betances

Aroldis Chapman is gone and if the Yankees can get a better return for Andrew Miller, they should trade him as well. That leaves Dellin Betances as the last man standing in the bullpen. Schoenfield: Untouchable players for all 30 teams
