Cardinals manager Mike Matheny's son, Jake, was named the Gatorade Missouri player of the year on Tuesday. Jake Matheny, a 6-foot-3 catcher like his dad, batted .411 with 11 home runs and 43 RBIs at Westminster Christian Academy in the St. Louis suburbs. He is committed to Indiana, but Mike Matheny said that could change after next month's draft. "A large catcher who hits with power, I know there are some scouts who like that," Mike Matheny said. "I would typically say most kids need college. He's probably a disciplined enough kid who could probably figure out how to do it on-line."

The Cubs-Cardinals rivalry even divides families in some of the nearby states, including Arkansas:

Illinois is a border state. The southern portion typically pulls for the Cardinals while the north goes for the Cubs or, sometimes, White Sox:

The Cubs and Cardinals draw a lot of fans from neighboring states. Several of them, including Indiana, are contested turf:

Even people born and raised in St. Louis are starting to get nervous this could be the year of the Cubs:

Cardinals pinch hitters have a 1.217 collective OPS this season, easily the best in the major leagues. They have hit nine home runs while exactly half the teams in baseball have zero. They think their power off the bench has been their secret weapon and made them a dangerous team to play close games against. Here is Mike Matheny talking about that:

Reyes among top 10 league prospects

RHP Alex Reyes made his first 2016 appearance on Sunday for Triple-A Memphis and took out eight batters in four innings. Keith Law projects that Reyes might make his major league debut later this year. Law: Top 25 MLB prospects (Insider)

Ludwick to rep Cardinals at draft

Former Cardinals OF Ryan Ludwick will represent the team at this year's MLB draft. Ludwick spent four of his 12 years in the majors with St. Louis and was named to the NL All-Star team in 2008.

Cardinals keep coming through in a pinch

Matt Adams' pinch-hit home run against the Cubs on Monday night was the Cardinals' 9th pinch-hit HR this year, most in MLB. The last time St. Louis had that many in a single season was 2000, per ESPN Stats & Info.

Stats & Info

Monday's longest home runs

Albert Pujols hit his 569th career home run in style, as the blast traveled 439 feet to lead the way among Monday homers.

Randal Grichuk talks about his first career walk-off home run, in a pretty big game, too, to keep the Cardinals in the hunt:

The Cubs suddenly don't look so all-time super after the Cardinals tied it in the seventh and won Randal Grichuk's walk-off home run. The Cubs have gone 4-8 in their past 12 games, hitting .222 in that span, and have dropped from a 130-win pace to a mere 109-win pace.
