Padres move Kemp to Braves, get back Olivera

The Padres have traded Matt Kemp to the Braves in exchange for third baseman Hector Olivera. San Diego will send $10.5 million to Atlanta as part of the deal, a source said.

David Schoenfield ESPN Senior Writer

The Padres and Braves are reportedly close to a deal of bad contracts, Matt Kemp for Hector Olivera. Kemp is on pace for 36 home runs and 100-plus RBIs, but has been barely above replacement-level value due to bad defense and a poor OBP. But at least the Braves dump Olivera, who has been on the suspended list for domestic violence. The Padres may just cut him.

Lineup: Braves (36-67) vs. Phillies (47-58)

  • 1. Jace Peterson, LF (L)
  • 2. Gordon Beckham, 2B (R)
  • 3. Freddie Freeman, 1B (L)

What a night for Freddie Freeman

Freeman had four hits, five RBIs, a home run and a stolen base on Wednesday. Only two other Braves have done all four of those things in the same game in the last 100 years: Marcus Giles in 2003 and Hank Aaron in 1958, ESPN Stats & Info notes.

Stats & Info

Wednesday's longest home runs

Yoenis Cespedes' nine-pitch showdown against Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright in the seventh inning ended in a 447-foot homer that ranked as the day's longest. Meanwhile, Giancarlo Stanton had yet another big blast.

Braves acquire Infielder Travis Demeritte RH power big tools with some upside ...hestarted in Futures Game. Harrell and Alvarez were not even in Braves organization nine weeks ago and Harrell was actually released out of minors and Alvarez was a waiver claim. Nice deal for Braves.

Small chance Braves trade Freeman

The Braves don't have many options to consider, but David Schoenfield writes he'd rather keep Freddie Freeman than Julio Teheran, given the Braves' lack of other quality offensive players. Untouchable players for all 30 teams

Jeff Francoeur happy to be with Braves

Most veterans would hope to be traded from a losing team, but Francoeur is happy with where he is. "I love being part of this team," he said. "I'm always going to be invested in Atlanta, just the city in general. And I want to be part of the solution for however long it's going to be." Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Braves remain last in ESPN rankings

The schedule indicated Atlanta might pick up coming out of the All-Star break. But the Braves have continued to struggle, even against teams with losing records. Week 16 Power Rankings
